Bad marketing tanks REALLY good ideas š”

ToggleHere’s what most brands get backwards. Before you can explain what your business does, you spend a LOT of money getting more people to notice you, while the sentence those people are supposed to walk away repeating doesn’t exist yet. You cannot scale a message you cannot say.
Try this right now, out loud. Finish this sentence: “We’re the ones who ___.”
If it took you longer than four seconds, or the words “solutions” or “quality” or “passionate about” wandered in, you just found the most expensive problem in your business. Not your ads. Not your website. This.
Before you touch any of your marketing channels, you need one sentence that says who you’re for and what you do for them, in words a stranger can repeat correctly after hearing them once. Every ad, every post, every email is just distribution for that sentence. If the sentence is fuzzy or confusing, you are paying to spread fog.
Most founders and marketers skip this step because it feels soft. It isn’t. It’s the difference between a marketing calendar and a marketing strategy, and you can usually feel the lack of progress in your growth chart.
Core (LP) is a multi location fitness studio brand in Michigan. They have GREAT workouts, and super loyal members. The “product” was never the problem. The marketing was.
If you landed on their site, you couldn’t quickly tell who it was for or why you’d choose it over the ten other studios within driving distance. The message tried to welcome everyone, which is a message that reaches no one. So, growth crawled.
We got specific. Core (LP) is for the person who finds the typical class too easy and actually wants to leave a little wrecked. “Strong is your bassline” is the sentence a member could repeat to a friend without thinking: they’re the ones who give you a harder workout than you bargained for. But we had to take that a step further… what does that actually mean?
“High intensity, low-impact Pilates-inspired strength training for your strenght, mobility and unstoppable energy.” Core (LP)’s most LOYAL clients like pilates, but want more intensity, and love a damn good playlist.
Once the message got clear, and we were able to distill it across the website and overall IMPROVE the user experience, membership climbed about 25% in six weeks, from roughly 100 members to 125, at a single location.

Nothing about the workout changed. People just finally understood what they were walking into, and HOW to get started, and the right ones showed up.
Start with who it’s for, and be willing to lose the people it isn’t for. “For everyone” is why nobody remembers you. Name the specific person who should feel like you built the thing for them.
Then name what you actually do for that person in plain words. If your sentence contains “solutions,” “innovative,” or “seamless,” delete it and say the real thing underneath. Those words are where meaning goes to hide.
Then, test it on a stranger. Say your sentence to someone outside your business and ask them to repeat it back an hour later. If they can, you have a message. If they paraphrase it into mush, you have more work, and it’s the highest-paid work you’ll do all quarter.
The test itself costs nothing. Learning to explain what your business does is the highest-leverage hour you’ll spend this quarter, and it’s free. Say your sentence out loud in your next team meeting and watch how long the room goes quiet trying to agree on it. That silence is the growth you’ve been leaving on the table.
